Was there ever a moment in your life when you wanted to give up? What inspired you to keep going? For me, it was the support I found at The Bridge for Youth that changed everything. Without the care from their staff, I don’t know where I would be today.
I’m sharing my story to show the impact our community of donors has made in the lives of youth experiencing homelessness, and ask that you please continue your support.
My name is Sam. I’m a 19-year-old freshman at St. John’s University, where I’m proud to play for the soccer team on a scholarship. It’s hard to believe that just over a year ago I was a high school senior experiencing homelessness. Although my parents adopted me when I was five, I was no longer able to rely on them. The uncertainty of each day was a challenge, and it felt like my life was on hold.
Then I found Rita’s House at The Bridge for Youth, and I finally had a support system I knew I could count on.
Make a gift by the end of the year, and your donation will go twice as far, thanks to an anonymous donor matching all gifts up to $100,000!
When I first arrived at Rita’s, a supportive housing community for youth ages 18-21, I was shy and anxious about being on my own. My Case Manager, Travina, and Program Manager, Travis, made the my transition so much easier. They were committed to helping me reach my goals in a way I had never experienced before. They provided the care and support I never got from my parents.
With this big change and one year of high school left, the road ahead felt long. My dreams of going to college and playing soccer felt out of reach. My grades suffered, and I really wanted to drop out. But the staff at The Bridge wouldn’t let me give up. They were a consistent presence in my life when I needed it most.

The staff at The Bridge were a consistent presence in my life when I needed it most. They helped me with everything from getting groceries to finding a job. They motivated me to keep on top of my schoolwork, encouraged me to keep playing soccer, and even took me shopping for a suit and helped me get ready for prom. Against all odds, I made it to graduation day and found myself with a scholarship to play soccer at St. John’s.
Because of the love and care I received at The Bridge, I found the resilience to graduate high school and pursue my dreams. My time at The Bridge taught me not to give up on myself. The kindness and consistency from the staff there is something I take with me every day. Now, I work to show up for my team the same way The Bridge showed up for me.
I wouldn’t be where I am without donors like you. When you make a gift to The Bridge, you create life-changing opportunities for youth like me to accomplish their dreams. I hope you will continue supporting youth on their journeys as they dream, inspire, and hope.
In commUNITY,
Sam, Former Youth at Rita’s House
P.S. Your support gives youth more than a home, it gives us hope. Make your gift by December 31st and it will be matched – helping twice as many young people find safety, stability, and a path forward.
