Love and care changes everything for youth experiencing homelessness. Through emergency shelter, supportive housing, and outreach programs at The Bridge, youth are given the tools to grow and become leaders for their communities.
Read a special message from Taty, a former youth in supportive housing at The Bridge and current member of the Youth Advisory Board, to learn how the love and care they received from The Bridge helped keep her determined. Then, consider making a gift to help ensure all youth are safe, accepted, and supported.
As I watch my sons play and grow together, I am reminded of my journey and the determination it took to get us where we are today.
I’m sharing our story with you today in hopes that you will join me on this journey and make a gift to The Bridge in support of young families like mine.
My experience at The Bridge taught me what it means to be determined – Determined to not only create the best life for my sons, but to ensuring every young person has the love, care, and opportunity they deserve.
I first turned to The Bridge as a teenager experiencing homelessness. A year later I returned, this time with my newborn son, Takaih. This time, we moved into Marlene’s Place, the supportive housing program for pregnant and parenting youth. From the moment I arrived, The Bridge provided me with much more than just a roof over my head – they offered me a safe, supportive space to grow as a mother and as a person.
The staff at The Bridge were like a loving family full of support. They were there during long nights when Takaih wouldn’t stop crying, when I needed rest, a shower, or help with laundry. They were always there, helping me and my baby with care and compassion. If it wasn’t for them I don’t know what I would’ve done.
The love and care I received from The Bridge not only kept me determined, it helped me discover my passion. Going through everything I did made me realize I that I want to give back and help others, just like the staff at The Bridge helped me.
Since leaving, I’ve graduated high school and am currently pursuing a degree in Social Work. I’m also a member of The Bridge’s Youth Advisory Board, where I was able to use my voice and expertise to speak at the State Capitol for Homeless Day on the Hill. I am also a youth leader on the advisory committee for a new Family Resource Center in South Minneapolis.
Looking at my sons, I can’t help but smile. I am determined to ensure my boys, and all youth, are safe, accepted, and supported. I sincerely hope you join us in this work by making a gift today.
